Lesson Summary:
In this lesson we will finish our discussion of fundamental security princples and discuss access control models.
This lesson is intended to provide an overview of the UNIX
system while creating a baseline understanding of how the many different flavors of 'NIX are similar
and different at the same time. Students will practice reading and modifying file permissions,
managing group settings, starting and stopping processes and general system hardening tasks.
Lesson Objectives:
- Explain how access control fits into the broader context that includes authentication, authorization, and auditing
- Define the major categories of access control policies
- Distinguish among subjects, objects, and access rights
- Describe the UNIX file access control model
- Understand Unix operating system operation and successfully navigate/modify system settings
- Identify vulnerabilities and apply system hardening procedures for production systems
- Review the essential shell commands
- Manage users and groups, including wheel and sudoers
- Explain file permissions and how to modify them
- Manage processes, services, and system startup/shutdown
